Chapter Twelve: Cry of the Hunters

Imagine that a third film version is now being contemplated. Who would you cast in the following roles? Ralph, Jack, Piggy, Simon, Roger, Samneric

Select ONE of the characters and write an interview with the CAST MEMBER selected for the role. The star will only answer TWO questions (agent’s rule) . Make them count!

Ralph: Ralph is initially referred to as the boy with the fair hair and is later described as being old enough, twelve years and a few months, to have lost the prominent tummy of childhood but not yet only enough for adolescence to have made him awkward. So with that in mind I would choose.. Dylan Minnette

Minnette076

Dylan played a great roll in the movies Prisoners which I just watched recently. He showed great emotion and when his sister is kidnapped his shows his sense of leadership which proves that he can play Ralphs character.

In the novel, Piggy is described as chubby I guess and wears thick glasses. He has short hair which never seems to get any longer. He suffers from asthma and he doesn’t really like to do anything which involves physical exercise. He can’t swim and the other boys view him as an outsider who is “bit of a joke,” but he is also intelligent. With that being said I chose Aedin Mincks

untitled

Aedin has the same body type so all you would have to do is place some specs on him, the perfect clothes and fix up his hair and you have piggy! Also, Aedin plays a role of an intelligent prodigy who is lazy and not athletic in his tv series so he is the perfect match to play Piggy’s character!

Jack was described as he was tall, thin, and bony: and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of his face stared two light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger. With that description, i would choose THE Alex Godbout, a picture is not even necessary because everyone knows him! Alex does not come off as someone that could act as Jack but once you get to know him you get to see his dark side. His is somewhat tall, and he is also thin. I believe that he can be a good actor and is great to get into character. Now that you know that Alex can act Jack, never get on his bad side.

Next, Simon is a small skinny boy “with eyes so bright they had been deceived as wicked”. He has a long mop of coarse black hair conceals most of his forehead and ears. With that description I would choose Chandler Riggs.

He has the luscious brown hair that could be grown a few more inches to fit the description and he also has the beautiful eyes that fit the description.

Lastly, Sam and Eric, later known simply as Samneric, are described in the book as being a pair of identical twins who were “Bullet-headed and with hair like tow.” It was hard for me to find a pair of identic twins to play the role of Samneric but after a long search with plenty of auditions I found Dylan and Casey Boersma.

kinopoisk.ru

These two boys are easily fit for the role of Samneric as anyone else would be. they fit the criteria and after auditioning them i found that they are tremendous actors that can play any role you ask of them!

Select ONE of the characters and write an interview with the CAST MEMBER selected for the role. The star will only answer TWO questions (agent’s rule) . Make them count!

I chose Dylan Minnette to interview.

Q. Why do you feel you are fit for playing the role of Ralph?

A. Well, I have read the book a couple times and have examined Ralphs character. I thought that I would have to act like a complete different person but after reading about his personality, I have a little bit of Ralph in my personality. I can be a leader whenever I choose to and I know how to run a group. I am confident in my acting skills and I know that I can easily put myself in Ralphs shoes to play the best role to make it an amazing film. Also I was recently in the movie ” The Prisoners” where I played the role of the brother with a sister who was kidnapped. It had a very sad plot but I was easily able to put myself in a different mindset and bring emotions to the set to shoot a great movie.

Q. How do you think this film will turn out? Do you have any suggestions

I believe that this film will turn out fantastic. I’ve already started bonding with all of the other actors and if they wish to make this film an amazing one as well, then we will! You chose such great actors for the film that resemble the different characters in the book in some way. One thing we must do is make our film stand out from all of the others. We must examine the novel many, many times to be able to understand fully what William Golding was trying to express. We will show the viewers that there’s is a little bit of evil in all of us. They will leave the movie theatre being amazed at what they just laid there eyes on.

Chapter Ten: The Shell and the Glasses Chapter Eleven: Castle Rock

49

In chapter 10, after Roger kills Piggy, the conch is destroyed into a million pieces, now Ralph is left on his own. If you were in Ralphs shoes, would you surrender to Jacks tribe? Or just try to survive on your own?

If I was in Ralphs shoes in that type of situation I would be so confused about everything that just happened and not be able to think straight. I would take a few seconds to get my head straight and come up with a master plan. Ralph being the leader that he is, he would not want to surrender to such a terrible person, so he would survive on his own, and that is exactly what I would do as well. If I has lead so many boys from the beginning of the story, it should not be hard to lead myself and just focus on keeping myself alive. I would start off by looking for some sort of shelter. I would try to blend in with the leaves and the nature. I would do what Ralph did and hide somewhere near where Jacks tribe is hiding. Although, I would definitely not tell the twins because at this point you can’t trust anyone. Jack was smart and tricked the twins into telling them where Ralph was. I would not tell anyone about my plans and try to be as quiet as possible.

Now that I am safely sitting in my own hideout, and I feel secure, I now have some time to think and process everything that happened. I would move on from that and focus how I can get rescued. I am very confident in my abilities and I don’t like to lose. Although, if all else fails I would have to join Jacks tribe for my safety. It would be hard to find food on my own without getting caught by Jack and his tribe. I could go hunting during the night and someone could possibly find me and mistake me for the beast and kill me like they killed Simon. It would a big surprise if they did accept me into their tribe but I would just try it anyways. I would have to beg and plead, my dignity would be lost, but it would be a smart decision if I would like to get rescued.

Chapter 8: Lord of the Flies

Alike Team Jacob and Team Edward in the Twilight series, there is an evident divide between the two groups on the island. If you were in the position of a big one on the island what team would you be a part of? Would you join Ralph’s team, Jack’s team, or even make up your own team? If you decide to make your own group explain what it would be like, if not explain why you chose Jack or Ralphs team

Jack and Ralph

If I were in such a terrible situation stranded on an island and I had to choose between two leaders or make my own group, I would definitely just choose one of the groups. I would not be able to be my own leader because I wouldn’t be very good under pressure. If I had the chance to choose one leader, Ralph or Jack, I would most likely choose Ralph’s side.

Ralph listens to everybody and their ideas and co-operates with everyone. Cooperation is a very successful survival strategy. Ralph is a better leader than Jack in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies because of his democratic approach and civil manner. Unlike Jack, he doesn’t want a savage society on the island. Ralph makes a better leader in our world because he is democratic and lets the boys on the island voice their opinions about certain things that they wanted to be done on the island. He also is a better leader because he didn’t turn into a savage for the whole time he was on the island. He also kept a positive attitude about getting rescued for the entire time he was on the island which I liked because if I was on the island I would to be reminded that we won’t stay on the island forever.

Ralph is a better leader because he is democratic and civil. He listens to what all the boys on the island had to say by making up the rule at meetings that only the person holding the conch could speak by saying ” We can’t have everyone talking at once. We’ll have `hands up’ like at school. Then I’ll give him the conch.”(Golding 33) So when all of the boys on the island had meetings Ralph was usually then one to hold the conch to speak to the boys about certain things. This shows a sense of leadership and organization which I found really amazing.

Ralph displays useful human qualities as a leader. He knows that in order to stay civilized the boys need stability and order. He creates rules and a simple form of government to achieve this order. Ralph understands that the boys have to be given respect and must be treated as equals. This makes Ralph a better leader than Jack. Under Jack’s rule, the boys become uncivilized savages. They have no discipline at all! However, Ralph keeps the boys under order through the meetings, which he calls himself. At these meetings a sense of order is put back into the boys because the boys have to wait until they hold the conch to speak.

To recap, I would choose Ralph as a leader over Jack because he has great leadership skills based on his personality, and he did not turn the boys into savages like Jack did.

Chapter 6: Beast from Air

piggy-and-sam-eric-hawi-united-states+1152_13200668314-tpfil02aw-22527

At the beginning of chapter six it is evident that Sam and Eric are really close. They not only have fire duty together, but they also must sleep together. This close bond is a very good thing to have on a deserted island to help and encourage you through the tough times. Assume you were in their position. Who would you want on the island for support and comfort? (Be creative. You could have celebrities, family members, or even a classmate) Explain your answer.

I would hate to have to think of being in a terrible situtation like being stranded on island, but if i was able to choose someone to be stranded with, i have a few people in mind. The answer most people are expected to see would be friends or family. But they wouldnt be the first on my list. This sounds a bit cruel but i just wouldnt want to have to be in such a terrible situation and might have to even watch the people i love die. So, having that said, I would love to be stranded with some of the people i look up to. It would be awesome to be able to live with one of my favourite basketball players or something and just learn about their lives and even learn some lessons from them. I would never get bored of listening to their stories and it would take my mind off of the possibility that i could starve to death. As much as i love my family and friends i think it would actually cause some trouble and would be kind of stressful because we would get into fights a lot. Although, i do have a few friends that i wouldnt mind living on island with but after a while i would get annoyed of them and possibly have to ditch them and leave them for themselves (Alex G). I havent yet answered the question correctly because i havent named anyone in specific so if i had to choose one person i would probably choose one of favourite basketball players which is Steph Curry. He seems like a nice person that i would be able to get along with, also he has nice eyes so i would never get sick of looking at him. I could hear all about his techniques all day and i would never get bored! I am pretty sure that no one in my English class knows who Steph Curry is so if you’re reading this I’d suggest you google his name just so you know. Lastly, if all of my favourite role models in this world had dinner plans or something and are not able to be stranded on island with me then I would probably have to invite my sister beccause she’s alright and kind of cool.

Chapter 5: Beast from Water

282414-loft_2_super

In chapter 5, Ralph, as chief, was clearly having difficulty controlling the group of rambunctious boys. If our grade 10 enriched English class were stranded on the deserted island, who do you think would best handle the stress and responsibility of being chief? Select one classmate (not including yourself or Mrs. Wittmann) and explain why you believe they would make a better chief than Ralph.

If I was stranded on an island with my grade 10 English and i had to designate one leader to be in control of making most of the decisions, i think i would choose Emma or James. It would be hard for me to choose between the two though. Emma can be very loud and enthusiastic is she wishes ( from what ive seen so far) and would be able to control people and get others attention if needed. From the way she answers questions in class i can tell that she has knowledge that can help the group and she can also communicate with others and get along with most people.  James on the other hand is a very intelligent person. From reading his blog i can already tell that he is someone that has great backgroud knowledge on this certain scenario. If we were all stranded on an island James would know what to do in the nature, which resources to use, and how to use them.

Now right before ending my blog I came across Alex Godbout’s blog and a thought came to my mind ” How could i forget about Alex? He would be the perfect fit for a leader!” Alex would have the ability to contol everyone and know exactly what to do considering food and shelter. I can barely even descibe with words how great of a leader he would be. Usually when i need someone to choose between something like purple or blue gatorade. I text WIll and Alex at the same and Alex is the is the first to respond with an amazing answer on why blue is better. Which shows Alex would be a great leader because he gives great advice and can communicate well with others.

I didnt completely answer this question corectly because i should have chosen just one person but theres just oso many awesome people in our class! In conclusion i would choose either, Emma, James, or Alex and then get the rest of the group to vote on who they would like best to be the leader

Lord of the Flies: Found Poem

He noticed Ralph’s scarred nakedness

and the sombre silence of all four of them

he sought, charitable in his happiness,

to include them in the thing that had happened

his mind was crowded with memories;

memories of the knowledge that had come to

them when they closed in on a stuggling pig,

knowledge that they had outwittted a living thing,

imposed their will upon it

taken away its life

like a long satisfying drink

Chapter 3: Huts on the beach

How would you spend your days on this deserted island?  What would you do with your time?

If i was stranded on an island I would do many things but most importantly i would make the best of a terrible situation. I would do whatever it took to survive but also look on the bright side of things so i don’t hate my life or something. I would pobably try to look for some friends so I’m not lonely. I would of course look for things on the island for a shelter, and i would try to make an awesome place to live. I would think of cool diffenet activites to do to make it fun. Basically i would try to have fun while being in a terrible situation

To start off i would look for others  strangers stranded on the island. I love making friends so i would love to do that! Suppose i did find some people, we would all live together to make things easier. I have 4 siblings and i think if i was an only child it would suck because the more people the merrier. After we were all in group i would designate a leader to make things easier and be more organized. Now that i’ve made some new friends and have got things started i would first walk the island. I would checkout everything this extraordinary island has to offer. Once doing that then i would know that it is time to start building a shelter. In my head right now i think that i would be able to build the best hut possible but in reality it would be very hard to do so. I would just seperate everybody into different groups and send them on a scavenger hunt. After collecting all of the different resources we may begin. Now that i have my shelter, its time to look for food. Food can just be anything on the island i guess. If i was stranded on an island, starving, i would probably eat anything that looks edible.

Now that i am settled with my food and shelter. I have soo much time on my hands. I would try my best to make my time here kind of fun instead of being sad that im stranded. I would come up with many differnent activites to do to keep myself and others entertained. One of the main options would be to play hide and go seek or manhunt or just some sort of tag. It could be risky if someone got lost but how could you not play hide and go seek on an island? I would also make sure to exercise daily. Being on an island gives me no excuse to not work out daily because i would simply have nothing else to do. I would most likely just run around the whole island and do any type of muscle workouts i can. I would be soo fit by the time i got rescued! I would spend my days thinking of master plans to get rescued. I wouldnt spend that much time on it though, just about 10 minutes a day. I would have deep conversations with people and just talk about random topics. I would also swim in the oceans and try to catch some fish or whatever people do in the ocean

In conclusion if i was stranded on an island i would try to make the best of a terrible situation. Theres no point to be sad about something that has already happened. I would keep everybody happy and think positive!

Chapter 2: Fire on the Mountain

fire_01

How would you solve the mystery of the beastie?

From the description in the book, I believe that the “beastie” is an gigantic snake of some sort that would be able to attack any human if it wanted to as described by the boy with the mullberry birthmark. When Ralph noticed that the boy went missing at the top of the mountain, they believed that he was killed by the beastie. Although it makes more sense that the boy was most likely consumed by the raging fire but Golding wrote as if the the boys thought that the beastie was what must have killed the boy. Now that the boy was killed by the beastie, all of  the boys must take precautions to prevent  death and protect themselves from this dangerous and mysterious creature that is allegedly sneaking around the island.

If i was apart of this group of boys the first thing i would do is designate a leader. In this type of situation there should be one person who is confident enough to make most of the decisions, it would prefferebly be one of the older boys.  This way there wont be as many arguements and plans will be created quickly. If i was the leader in the situation i would divide the group into two; the older boys and the youngers boys. The older ones will be the ones to actually be in battle with the beastie if needed. The younger ones will be in charge of shelter and food. The older boys must always travel around in pairs if they wish to separate themselves around the mountain

Now that everyone knows their job, we must prepare a plan on how to capture the beastie. I would sepearate everyone in pairs and place them around the mountain. We will try to prepare any type of trap from materials on the island that will capture the beastie. We will start of by placing a trap where the boy with the mulbary birthmark died. If the beastie was once in that spot it is likely that he will appear again. If the boys were to get a quick glimpse of the beastie i would say not to attack right away. We will mark off anywhere on the island and what time that the beastie has appeared Then after a few days of examining this monster then we will gather all of our information together and see what we have. Once we know this monster well, that is the best oppurtunity to strike. If we attack right away and miss, this monster could come for us and it would be too late. It is smart to take our time

Until we attack everybody will take shifts being on lookout. I will designate different areas of the island that everyone will guard. We will figure out a plan for what one must do if they see the beastie. The boys must take all necessarys precautions to ensure no one is harmed by the snake.  I think that it would be smart to make sure that only boys 10 years old and over attend the snake hunt. It is way too risky to have smaller boys out out there, it may be too easy for the snake to catch them and we could possibly lose one in the dark forest. While the other boys are on lookout or up on the mountain i would get Piggy to stay with the little ones because he would not be able to do that much on guard because of his asthma.

After days of examining this monster and we now know exactly what to do to capture it i would say that it is time to attack before it attacks us. We would use the type of traps that we thought of and put them into action. Our first choice will be to kill the beastie at first glance appose to capturing it and letting it stay alive. If we were to capture it in a cage of some sort it would possibly be able to get it away before we have a chance to kill it.

In conclusion, i would be patient while trying to capture the beastie. Everyone would have different jobs to make it easier, there would be a designated leader, we would plan every step ahead before attacking, only the younger boys would be in battle with the beastie and we will have people out on lookout at night

Chapter 1: The Sound of the Shell

Quote

Preface: “if it can’t be read aloud, its no good” (John Braine).  Select a passage from Chapter One you believe displays good writing.  Explain how it is good.

Quote 1: “[There was] something dark…fumbling along….The creature was a party of boys, marching approximately in…two parallel lines….”

Quote 2: “[Jack was] tall, thin, and bony…his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was…freckled, and ugly without silliness.”

I chose these two passages from the novel because they both show the authors great technique of writing. William Golding uses great descriptive words when speaking about characters or things in the book. This gives the reader an oportunity to visualize everything that is going on in the story to get a greater understanding of the novel. Just like Albert Einstein said ” If I can’t picture it, I can’t see it”

I don’t about anyone else, but its very important for me visualize what I am reading about, otherwise it doesn’t really sink into my head what exactly is going on. I would like to feel that I am actually on the island with the boys while I am reading the novel. I liked how Golding described Jack. From now on in this novel whenever I read about Jack i picture this image of him in my head that is provided by the author. I am able to make connections between Jacks characters and characters in real life.

Goulding also uses certain words and phrases to add gravity to the situation. He also painted such a clear picture, it felt like I could be there with the boys on the island. Hopefully Golding uses this great method throughout the novel so that I enjoy reading it.
